Metal Door Repair with Auto Body Filler |
While I was in the filling mood, I decided to repair the hole put in the metal door at the shop by the snow plow last year. And no, I wasn't the plower. I used the same Cross Fire Body Filler made by Martin Senour Co. which can be purchased at any auto parts store.
Scene of the crime
First thing I did was pry the metal back to as close as possible to its original state using needle nose pliers and a screw driver. Next I buffed the area with a wire brush in my electric drill to get rid of loose paint and try to expose as much bare metal as possible.

The metal is fairly thin so if you use a power sander, try not to sand throw the metal.
After cleaning up the dust, mix the auto body filler as previously decided in the last post, as well as on the can, and spread it over the area working it into the cracks and feathering out the edges as much as possible. Don't be afraid of building up a good thickness .

After about twenty minutes I used the vibrating sander to smooth it out and blend the edges into the surrounding surface. You will find that the filler sands as easy as wood if not easier. Use 80 grit sandpaper and go up to 120 grit for the finish. Of course other projects may want an ever smoother finish, as in a car where you want super smooth for the best paint job in the end. But this is just an old exterior door I will brush painted.
Good enough, ready for paint.

Not perfect be a whole lot better.
Please pass along any other projects you used auto filler on.
