Waves erode spots on Ediz Hook -- Port Angeles Port Townsend Sequim Forks Jefferson County Clallam County Olympic Peninsula Daily NEWS

PORT ANGELES — A combination of high surf and high tides earlier this week have caused substantial erosion on Ediz Hook.

The erosion, on the south side of the sand spit, has undercut the shoulder of Ediz Hook Road at two locations — as much as 3 feet in places — and removed soil around a telephone pole.

The damage occurred between the boat launch and the Coast Guard station Sunday and Monday, said Glenn Cutler, city public works and utilities director.

Undercut areas are marked by cones to warn drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians away from abrupt edges.

Cutler, city public works and utilities director, said the erosion should be repaired in the next few weeks.

It's anticipated to cost between $30,000 and $50,000.
